Celebrating the Anniversary of an Iconic Sculpture

“World’s Largest Cowboy Boots” at North Star Mall turns 40

Bob Wade – also known as Daddy-O – was famous for his whimsical, larger-than-life sculptures. Some of his most famous pieces of work include a 40-foot-long iguana that lived atop Manhattan's Lone Star Cafe and a 63-foot-high saxophone created on behalf of a Houston blues nightclub.

In 1979, Wade was commissioned to create an oversized pair of cowboy boots as part of an arts initiative titled Washington Projects for the Arts. While the boots initially lived blocks away from the White House, they were subsequently purchased by North Star Mall and have since become a staple of the center. Standing at over 35-feet-tall, the sculpture holds the Guinness World Record for the world's largest pair of cowboy boots. The boots have now become a popular tourist spot, with nearly 200,000 cars passing by them daily on Loop 410.

As we celebrate the 40th anniversary of the iconic cowboy boots, we remember its creator, Bob Wade, who passed away in 2019 at the age of 76. While he isn't with us to celebrate this milestone, we will always remember his work, his commitment to the arts, and the profound impact he had on others.
