2018 Year in Review: Notable Retail Experiences
"The start of a new year is a time to both reflect on
what has transpired as well as what lies ahead."
- Sandeep Mathrani, CEO, Brookfield Properties' retail group and Vice Chairman, Brookfield Properties
As we enter the new year, we want to take a moment to look back at our achievements from 2018. From new store openings, to property redevelopments, to event activations and beyond, the Brookfield Properties team has worked hard to manage our 161 properties, introduce innovative concepts, and revolutionize the retail industry. Here are some of our 2018 highlights:
Notable New Store Opening
Life Time Athletic
Quail Springs Mall opened its doors to Life Time Athletic, the first athletic resort of its kind in the Oklahoma City area. The 236,000-square-foot space features eight tennis courts, two basketball courts, one studio cycle theater, three yoga studios, Kids Academy, LifeCafe, LifeSpa, more than 400 pieces of cardio equipment and an indoor/outdoor aquatic center.
Notable Property Redevelopment
Northbrook Court's proposed transformation includes a modern, open-air redevelopment with an elevated tenant mix, all accompanied by a community gathering area for special programming and events. Featured amenities include a gourmet grocery, boutique fitness concept, luxury residential, renowned retail and signature restaurants.
Notable Digitally Native Client
In November 2018, online retail giant, Wayfair, launched its first-ever brick and mortar shop at Natick Mall in Boston, Massachusetts. The holiday pop-up allowed customers to gain access to Wayfair's innovative new home solutions, learn how to manage home improvement projects and browse more than 100 fabric swatches.
Notable Eat/Drink Partnership
Tysons Galleria's Urbanspace is a new food hall that brings together local chefs for an impeccable culinary experience. Brookfield Properties is dedicated to helping eat/drink brands grow within the retail space, and was thrilled to work with brands like Andy's Pizza, donburi, Ice Cream Jubilee, Lady M Cake Boutique, Sean Khao and Stomping Ground to introduce them to our communities of shoppers.
Best Use of Urban Retail
The Trolls Experience
Our property at 218 West 57th in New York City transformed the lovable, animated film, Trolls, into an interactive and magical experience. The 12,000-square-foot fully immersive space invites children to explore the “Best day Ever” as they sing, dance and make friends with familiar characters.
Featured Innovation Project
AR at Ala Moana Center
Finding a specific product or retailer in 2.4 million square feet of retail space can be daunting – which is why we helped Ala Moana Center debut a new AR (Augmented Reality) directory to help shoppers and diners navigate the mall and narrow their search to the most relevant stores and restaurants based on what they are looking for.
Notable Pop-Up Shop
Luxury Italian shoe retailer, M. Gemi has been opening a variety of physical retail formats designed to give customers a whole new experience on their path to purchase. On the M. Gemi Andiamo Tour, the brand toured the country in a vintage gelato trucking selling its most popular shoe styles and making stops at Tysons Galleria, Water Tower Place and Oakbrook Center.
